I am a Guidance Counsellor working at Presentation Secondary School in Limerick city centre, catchment area being Limerick's Southside. I wrote this song as a result of my frustration with education cuts announced by Ruairi Quinn in December's budget, which will in many cases severely impact on guidance and counselling services currently being provided in post primary schools. Given the current economic climate, where families are in very difficult financial circumstances, it is vital that guidance and counselling services are not only protected but increased. While the song represents the possible loss of career, educational and counselling services, it also represents the loss that we as guidance counsellors, deal with every day in our one-to-one counselling support to students ie bereavement, parental separation. The song is performed by Rachel Creed, a past pupil who herself has been recently bereaved, Leonie Bennett, a current Leaving Cert student, who will be the first person in her family to complete the Leaving Cert and hopefully go on to Third Level Education and myself.
