She received training in drama at Spelman and Clark Colleges and from the DC Black Repertory Company directed by actor Robert Hooks. She sang with the internationally acclaimed and Grammy Award winning a cappella sextet Sweet Honey In The Rock for approximately twenty years and shortly thereafter for five years with harpist Jeffmajors.
